Denys Downing New! Posted by Martin Tyler on 8th Oct 24
It is with great sadness that our President Denys Downing passed away on Wednesday afternoon 2nd October in the presence of Meg and daughter Sarah, sons Paul and Mark, following a long illness.

Denys's early career was in banking and after retiring from Barclays, he became financial director of Lee Valley Estates Property Development until he decided to fully retire. Outside of business Denys spent much of his time helping the CW Youth Football Club. During this time he masterminded an annual Fun Run of three times round The Common on New Year's Day which was held over several years. Following on from this he became involved in CWCC when his two boys Paul and Mark played 1st XI cricket and Colts respectively. At that time he managed one of the Colts groups and was subsequently elected as Club Chairman from 1993 to 2003. After the death of the then President Martin Wrigley, Denys was invited and elected as Club President in 2006.

Denys was well respected in both of these formal roles. Latterly he helped support, both through giving much time and funding, with work on a project to replace our 'old shack' pavilion, several years prior to the partnership with Mission Employable that led to today's super new pavilion. His dedication and generosity to our Club in many forms was exceptional and his enthusiasm and kindness towards the Club was second to none. He will never be forgotten.
